Allied Logics hit by the CIH virus
The 26th of April was is particularly bad day for us. We turned on the computers in the morning to finish a long overdue programming venture and also to make the backups of some source code. The computer booted and Windows 98 came up saying its getting loaded. Waited. The desktop came up as usual, although a bit late. THEN IT GOT STUCK !!!!
We never thought it would be the virus. We rebooted it. Then it just refused to turn on ! Still we had no idea it was the Chernobyl that was causing the problems. Mainly because we did not think of the importance of that day…or maybe we didn’t even know it was the 26th. We had something better to think of. But by then somebody had came up with the reason. And since we all knew about the existence of the virus and the date, the 26th the answer slowly began to look obvious. Yes. It was DOOM.
About six months of work. A lot of software in their final stages. All meant to be backed up on that day. It was all gone. Nothing was left of the hard drives actually. It was perfectly empty now. The BIOS had to be replaced in all the machines. It was a particularly bad day for all of us.
We don’t blame the creator of the virus
We have no complaints against the creator of the virus for what it did to us. It was just an amazing piece of programming talent. And we had always admired great software talent. It was a virus of an unprecedented kind. And it was the virus of the future. We must all understand that we should blame only ourselves for not taking proper care in securing our systems. Lest it will only be to our disadvantage. Anyway this has taught us a very important lesson. Something that we are not likely to forget in the near future.
