TIPS TO BE SMART ON THE INTERNET !!!
Let me tell you one thing first. This is not meant for people who have never used the net. Instead it is for people who have used it a few times, have an e-mail address and at least know how to search the web properly. So if you are a perfect newbie you better go somewhere else and get smart first and then come here to get smarter.
Lets start with mailing -
Many of you might still be using Web based e-mail to access your mail. This is a sheer waste of online time. It is always better to use an e-mail client like Microsoft Outlook, Pegasus mail, EudoraMail etc.. This lets you compose mail off-line at the luxury of not wasting your online time. Then you just send it through your ISP. This will save you a lot of time than going to hotmail and composing mail there. For more information on this you can refer to your ISPs web site.
But there are many of you who don't have an account with the ISP. This part is for you. There are many sites offering free SMTP mailing services, just like Hotmail. For myself I use pplmail.com. I ll give you this example. I have an account with populous mail(pplmail.com). When I want to compose mail I just write it off line and send it to smtp.pplmail.com. It will be automatically sent to the address you specified. Also this site offers POP mail checking. So you don't have to go to their web site to read your mail. Infact you cant. But you can download it from their server (pop.pplmail.com) and then read it off-line. This is atleast 10 times faster than reading it online.
About security. Well, you must agree that it is very funny to read other people mail and do stupid things to their mail accounts. So you better keep your password a secret. Don't fill in your mamma's name or something like that. Think of something more complicated and something that might never occur to you yourself! And there is another hidden danger in e-mail accounts. If you lose your e-mail account there is an option to answer a personal question that you filled at registration time and if the answer is correct then you are given access. So don't set the "City in which I was born" as the question. Think of something better. And many of you put in birthdays. This is very vulnerable. Especially if you chat a lot. In chat you find a lot of cunning people who just love to screw up e-mail accounts. They are real smart at that too.
Creating Web Pages
There are still many of you who still code in not-WYSIWYG(What you see is what you get) editors. This is a sheer waste of time. With a WYSIWYG editor you can design the web site visually and you can view the layout in real time. This saves a lot of time since you don't have to feel disappointed and change the page after you find out it is not actually so kewl. And it also save the time of typing all those <TAGS>. My favorite web page designers are Macromedia Dreamweaver (simple and effective) and Microsoft Frontpage ( not frontpage express! This one is just great.) Also don't design your web page with too much compatibility in mind unless you are designing something very important from the commercial point of view. For example many functions found in IE3.0 are not found in earlier versions. So when you give importance to compatibility you just have to lose a lot of good things. Just understand that THERE ARE VERY FEW PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO STILL USE PRE-HISTORIC VERSIONS OF BROWSERS. Believe me, most of them use the later versions. The case is the same with Netscape too. And another important thing is that when you are using scripting languages better use Java Script. VBScript may be easier but since it is predominantly Microsoft technology there isn't much of support outside the windows world and not even entirely in the windows world. But Java Script is well supported every where. Even Microsoft never uses VBScript. Or if you are hell bent on using VBScript you can begin your page with Java Script to determine if the browser accepts VBScript and then switch to VBScript. And then don't include too many Java applets in your web page. It would just lengthen the world wide wait. They load slowly and until they load the whole screen looks pretty patchy. So better show restraint on that. Also you are strongly advised from using more than one Java applet in a single page. The system might just commit suicide.
Chatting !!! :)
This is one of my favorite pass times. There isn't a better yet useless way to spend time on the net. You can go on for hours and hours on the chat. First thing to understand is that the chatters are pretty good at lying. More so if they chat often. I admit I am a great liar on chat. Because you cant survive without lies ! So never trust a word from anyone unless you feel confident. And don't get confident very soon. Often, most often rather most of the females on the net are probably males just having a good enjoyment watching you plead miserably for some chat. Great !!! And the chat is also a great place where people ask you all sorts of personal details from phone no to e-mail addresses to even E-MAIL PASSWORDS !!! Infact even if they don't do it directly make sure you don't hand over the data you entered into the "Forgot Password : Answer this question " section of your e-mail account. For example hotmail asks you a question if you forgot your mail password. If you fill in right then you are through. So in any case keep it a secret. And also never open attachments that you receive from your chat friends unless you are sure it is safe. If you are using Java and HTML chat I think you should try IRC chat. It is lightning fast and has got some really kewl options like sending photos, DCC chat etc.. You check it out yourself. Its a long story. Let me just tell you that to chat in IRC you got to have a chat software that you can download from anywhere on the net. I never chat outside IRC these days. I am so used to the speed it gives me.
Downloading
This where you have to be double careful. Don't download anything unless you have the latest virus scanner. Otherwise you might end up having a PC that might me worse than a typewriter. You could lose days of work plus money too if you are hit by a virus that damages hardware too like W95.CIH (Chernobyl). Always keep your virus definitions latest by updating them from the web-site of the virus scanner developer. Also check out www.symantec.com if you suspect you have been infected with a virus. They are the best in business and their latest scanner Version 5 of NAV (Norton Anti Virus) is the best one there is. It is a real KILLER of a scanner !
Also take maximum care when downloading files from the warez web-sites. These are sites where you find illegal software and cracks. These could often contain new and dangerous virii often planted deliberately. But the fact remains that these sites are still on of the most frequently visited on the net. They often contain great software for FREE ! Although illegal. Use them wisely. Dont download this and that without scanning them with, should I repeat, the latest....
