Back Orifice
2000
This
is one software that I always admired. Although as the name suggests,
the software is pretty notorious, this is very impressive. Back Orifice
2000 was released in mid-1999 following the great success of the earlier
version. Only to be downloaded on a scale unprecedented. Coders had been
waiting for BO2k for quite some time. It is basically a remote-administration
tool and does a damn good job of it. BO2k has also included some encryption
features this time making the US version very secure. The other one is
however using poor encryption techniques due to the US export restrictions.
The new version is a lot more user friendly than the first. The server
configuration utility is not graphical compared to the earlier command
line one. But this software will be of more interest to programmers.
BO2k
is a programmers delight, because it comes with the source code and the
GNU license lets you modify it to suit your needs. I was quite astonished
by the source code. It might be large, hundreds of files, but the code
it very easy to understand and is a perfect text-book for Windows programmers.
If you like using Win32, then I think you should download the source code
and try it. Also for those of you who use MFC, this is a good oppurtunity
to see what wonderful things you can do by using the raw Win32 API. But
if you never used Win32 before, then you might need some getting used
to the code.
